Cancer

A few years ago a passing comment by a man in a line at the till changed my life profoundly. I learnt how disproportionate the fund raising and awareness for breast cancer vs prostate cancer is. For ever $1 raised for prostate cancer, $50 is raised for breast cancer. The odds of getting each is the same 1 in 6.

Last year I was crazy and did the Ride to Conquer Cancer, and raised over $3,200 for Prostate Cancer, and this year I raised another $3100. The ride was amazing and very challenging. It was not only a physical challenge but a mental challenge. Dealing with the last stretch it was a struggle mentally to stay focused, to persevere and to keep my mind on the goal. This is the same challenge that those dealing with cancer struggle with, they have huge physical hurdles coping with the treatments, they have the mental challenges to keep focused on the goal, as if they don’t they will fail, and failure for them is NOT an option.

They also have struggles with money, talking with those that have dealt with cancer it can be a huge financial burden. This is also a struggle for me as well, to raise not only the minimum money but to hit my crazy goal.

To do this, I really need your help, not only financially but by asking people you knows to help support me. I am only as strong as those who stand behind me and support me. I am also very appreciated of your support last year, and hope that you can help me again this year to meet this challenge.

My grandfather died when I was very young, I must have been 4 years old, but I remember him sitting in his favorite rocking chair and smoking a pipe. This past winter I asked my mom what he died of, and she told me prostate cancer. This re-affirms my commitment to raising awareness, as he didn’t need to die, and neither does any one else from prostate cancer.
